Upanayanam Ceremony

Upanayanam Ceremony, also known as Sacred Thread Ceremony or Yajnopaveetam Sanskar, is one of the most important Hindu Samskaras performed mainly among Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas. A Brahmin is traditionally known as “Dwija”, meaning “twice born”. Through Upanayanam Samskara, a young boy enters Brahmacharya Ashram and becomes spiritually eligible to study the Vedas and perform sacred rituals. During the ceremony, a sacred thread called Janeu or Yajnopaveetam is placed across the left shoulder of the boy. The sacred thread contains three strands symbolizing: • Debt towards the Guru (Teacher) • Debt towards Parents and Ancestors • Debt towards God The ceremony marks the beginning of spiritual education, discipline and responsibility in life.
